How to walk a dog with a leash?

i plan on getting a dog but before that i want to do some research…some wesites say that you should not let the dog walk in from of you is that true? or does it not matter?

It’s ok to let the dog wander around and have fun, but it should be ABLE to stay by your side if trained properly. If you really are leading it, it will have to stay next to you or beside you and keep looking at you to see where you’re moving.

  1. I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Also, I recommend two TV shows, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, and "It’s Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both programs are very instructive and often deal with the issues you raise here. Good luck!

  3. First of all, I’d recommend getting a gentle leader. It’s a head collar that won’t choke them during training. Traditionally, you should train them to walk on the left next to you on a relaxed leash. Happy training!

  4. It is probably best for you to train the dog to let you control him/her when you are outside with your dog. It is easier and it will keep your dog safer. It is very important for you to stay near your dog when you walk him or her. I hope that this helps!! :)

  5. Yes, you shouldn’t let the dog walk in front of you, especially a larger or stronger dog. When dogs are in front of you, they feel that you are going where they want to go. It should be the other way around. The dog should know that they are following you. By keeping your dog by your side, they will quickly learn this. This is important to do with puppies, especially for large breeds.
To leash train a dog, pull on their leash whenever they start going ahead- for smaller dogs or young puppies, use a harness. Small dogs can get hurt if you pull on a collar too hard. During your walk, make short stops. The dog will learn to stop when you stop, and to go when you go. Don’t let him go to the side or pull ahead.

  6. I would suggest buying a training collar. It is kinda like a chike chain except it has spikes that poke the dog’s neck[not hurting it but more of startling them] I have one for my dog becuase he likes to pull me down the road and it works great.
It’s okay to let your dog wander around in front of you…As long as you are in control.
