How often do you really walk your dog?

I have a Rat Terrier and quite frankily, she does not get walked very much. She is not overweight by any means. I just feel like she has turned into a lap dog or house dog. She is a breed typically very active. When I do walk her, she walks me (obviously because she is not used to it). She does get exercise though in our large fenced-in backyard.

I am just curious if there are many people out there who don’t really walk their dogs.

I don’t necessarily walk them. We go to the dog park several times a week and walk the other days. They get some sort of out-of-the-house exercise probably 5-6 days a week, 1-3 hours each of those days depending on my schedule. I didn’t walk them today because the weather was AWFUL.

I don’t really have a choice though, with a border collie.

  1. I have five acres (1 fenced in acre) so I don’t really worry about walking my dogs because they have tons of room to run and play with each other. about once a week I’ll take a dog out for a mile or two walk.

  4. I walk my rotti x every day for about 1.5 hours sometimes 2 hours. Though I had an am staff who passed last year, and I didn’t walk her very often, I dont know why, she was a little ‘heavy’ lol but she was a very lazy dog, every since she was a pup, she just didn’t have the energy like most dogs

  6. hello,

well, there aren’t many people out there who don’t walk their dogs for the reason that walking dogs with you is a form of bonding with your favorite buddy.

in our case, we have lots of dogs at home and we don’t take them out for a walk. we just let them play around our garden. so that they can also have some form of exercise :)

  11. You know I’ve owned & fostered many dogs and found each dogs personality different. If the dog is brought up in a couch potato enviroment then that dog will be a couch potato! If there are a lot of active people around it will require alot of activity such as walks. They recommend walks to help stimulate the dog-it helps it with behavior problems and helps the dog learn who is boss and to socialize them. I recommend walking a dog at least for an hour a day, but honestly I have some dogs that I don’t ever walk, they don’t enjoy it they would rather stay in thier territory and patrol it then venture out. My dogs are not the only dogs in thier family so they get socialization with other dogs at home. But if your dogs hyper-walk it it really helps!

  12. I guess I don’t think walking a dog on a leash at a controlled pace is the end all be all.

I do believe exercise is very important, and we do walk every day. But we also plan unleashed excursions for every week, plus I make sure to exercise her mind with games/tricks/activities.

I think sometimes the mind set of having a fenced yard can "tend" to make people be not as creative with their pets. You just let them out, etc. Obviously not everyone falls into this trap, however I have seen it enough to know that is does happen.

Even if you have a large yard it’s important to exercise your dog. Having the space is no guarantee that your dog is using it.
