How cold is too cold to walk the dog?

Walked the dog this morning at it was 32 degrees out, it’s suppose to get colder this week and on Friday it will be about 10 degrees during our walk time. When is it too cold for the cute puppy paws?

One is a black lab (less worried about him)
One is a GSD mix (thinner coat)
Haha. 10 degrees is cold to a woman that LOVES the summer time. =) Thanks for the input so far guys.

Last winter, I walked Kip when it was below -30 C (-22 F).

32 is not cold. 10 is not cold.

Dress appropriately, and have fun.

  2. if it gets below freezing you shouldn’t take them for long walks. you can get sweaters and jackets for big dogs with thin fur.

  3. Both of them should be fine no matter how cold it gets.
You should just bundle up and go for it.
Its been about 20 degrees here for a week and it actually seems to be helping my 9 week old pug pups learn how to go potty outside MUCH faster!

  4. When its too cold for you, chances are, its too cold for them as well. Just split you time into shorter walks, but more of them if its too cold.

  5. I put a coat on our dog when the temperature goes into the teens. Because you have to walk the dog no matter what. Consider looking into doggy booties. They have some nice products out now.

  6. I’m sure you’ll know if they really want to go out in it or not. Or if they want to come back in. Not hard to tell.

  7. around here they cancel school if the district has a lot of walkers at about -20 F windchill.

  8. You can walk your dog in a cold if you put a sweater on him to keep him warm just don’t take him on a long walk going to be 10 degrees outside but your dog should be fine.

  9. 32 degrees is a heat wave. It got down to -13 where I live and the dogs still didn’t mind it. What are cute puppy paws, is that some sort of boots for dogs?

  10. I have a coat for my small dog, and my big dog is ok he has a lot of fur (akita) But remember to clean their feet when you bring them in. They have ice on them if there is snow out. (I have heard of their pads sticking outside if they step in something wet, then dry – so watch for that)

  11. I would say below zero is especially when you need to be careful. I would be more concerned with there paws then their coats. The pads on their feet can get frost bite very quickly just like our hands and feet. I would say make sure to put boots and a coat on them when you go out and they should be able to withstand just as much if not more than you can.

  12. We tried going to a dog park at 0 degrees once–my dog ran straight back to the car! Your dog will let you know.
