Trick or Treating for Pets?

Posted in Pet friendly holiday on October 22nd, 2009 by Chris Swaap – 3 Comments

I was wondering if anyone else has thought of pets going trick or treating. More specifically, if anyone thinks that neighborhoods having "pet friendly" houses where dogs and cats could go tricking or treating for goodies. I love getting my dog involved in the holidays. Halloween has become one of my favorites and want to do something with him. What are your opinions on this?

Good idea…but maybe you can plan it in advance so that people can volunteer to sign up and then you can distribute the list to your neighborhood. Maybe you should narrow it down and just have a few households participate and exchange with each other so it won’t be so much work. A mixer would be nice.

Taking dogs on holiday to Bigbury, Devon. Can you recommend any nice walks?

Posted in Pet friendly cottage on October 22nd, 2009 by Chris Swaap – 4 Comments

I am looking for safe parks, fields, dunes etc, where I can have my dogs off lead playing with frisbees and balls, and walks which are not heavily populated with tourists (yes, I know I am one).

Also any info on dog friendly beaches and pubs around the area would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance!

There are some lovely beaches in Devon use this link for directions and details of restrictions

How often do you really walk your dog?

Posted in Walks with Dogs on October 22nd, 2009 by Chris Swaap – 20 Comments

I have a Rat Terrier and quite frankily, she does not get walked very much. She is not overweight by any means. I just feel like she has turned into a lap dog or house dog. She is a breed typically very active. When I do walk her, she walks me (obviously because she is not used to it). She does get exercise though in our large fenced-in backyard.

I am just curious if there are many people out there who don’t really walk their dogs.

I don’t necessarily walk them. We go to the dog park several times a week and walk the other days. They get some sort of out-of-the-house exercise probably 5-6 days a week, 1-3 hours each of those days depending on my schedule. I didn’t walk them today because the weather was AWFUL.

I don’t really have a choice though, with a border collie.

we already have a cat and need a dog that will be friendly and can become part of a family. We have a house with garden but will walk the dog whenever neccesary. Also what do we do with the dog when going on holiday? do you know any breeds that are good family pets and are medium sized? thnx

Go for a Rough Collie (lassie dog) there so laid back and will get on with the cat, and there a great family dog. When you go on holiday, find a nice kennels to look after it while your away.

How can I walk my dog if every time I put a leash on him he freezes?

Posted in Walks with Dogs on October 20th, 2009 by Chris Swaap – 10 Comments

I think my dog was abused before we found him, and that might be why, but now I want to walk him and he won’t walk!

You need to break the association that leash = bad. Start by getting to leash = normal.

You’re going to need to watch him while he has it on to make sure he doesn’t get stuck on anything and then get stressed out as a result, but just let him run around with a short one on for a while until this doesn’t bother him anymore. He’ll probably freak out at first, but there’s only so long a dog will let being put on a leash get in the way of something else interesting if opportunities arise.

Another possiblity is that he’s never seen a leash before, too. Young puppies happly take anything new like that as normal and ho-hum, but older puppies and adults often DO NOT. I got an adult dog once who’d not been mistreated, but just had never been leashed by the previous owner as that wasn’t important in those circumstances. . . she’d either stop dead in her tracks and dig in or try to throw herself around like a horse to see if that’d get it off. (This was after she’d finally gotten used to the idea of a collar; she threw fits over that, too.) A few weeks of letting her drag one around at least would get her to walk out the door with it on — then it was another few weeks to actually get her to go for a walk.
